Abstract

Objectives. To conduct a retrospective assessment of the epidemiological characteristics of surgical cases of cystic echinococcosis recorded in the Republic of Moldova between 1980 and 2020.

Materials and methods. The study focused on a retrospective epidemiological investigation of data from the registers of human echinococcosis cases, the sectoral statistical reports 1-săn Statistical Report on „Parasitic Diseases and the Control of Blood-feeding Diptera” and 2-săn „On Infectious and Parasitic Diseases” for this period, held by the National Agency for Public Health.

Results. During the study period, 5,491 surgically confirmed cases of cystic echinococcosis were recorded, with patients ranging in age from 2 to 76 years. The disease affected men (51.1%) and women (48.9%) with similar frequency. The highest number of cases (233) was recorded in 2003, and the lowest (30) in 2020. The mean incidence during the study period was 3.5 cases per 100,000 population. Despite the downward trend in incidence, cystic echinococcosis continues to represent an important public health burden in the Republic of Moldova.

Conclusions. Cystic echinococcosis is the most common biohelminthiasis in the country. Measures to combat zoonotic helminthiasis are far more complex than those used against anthroponotic helminthiasis. Control of this infection must be based on cooperation between medical and veterinary services, with veterinary services playing a key role. It is currently particularly important to adapt the existing control system to the new economic conditions.
