Abstract

Objectives. Conducting a review of the literature pertaining to the different etiopathogenic and clinical aspects of the overactive bladder in women.

Material and methods. The PubMed and Google Scholar databases were used to identify current scientific publications on overactive bladder in women, published between 2013 and 2023, using the following keywords and phrases: „overactive bladder in women”, „overactive bladder epidemiology”, „overactive bladder risk factors”, „overactive bladder symptoms”, „overactive bladder diagnosis”, „overactive bladder treatment”.

Results. Data from 81 publications were researched and synthesized, a critical review was carried out and the detailed and coherent results presented the epidemiological, etiopathogenic, and clinical-diagnostic aspects of overactive bladder in women. Relevant citations from selected articles were included, and a synthesis of key information was provided.

Conclusions. The incidence and prevalence of overactive bladder are higher in women compared to men. Overactive bladder affects different age groups, including young women with more pronounced negative effects. Symptoms and clinical presentation of overactive bladder may vary between women and men, with a more polymorphic picture in women. Women may experience certain psychovegetative disorders with a greater psychosocial burden compared to men and a greater impairment on the quality of life.
